Tributes have been paid this week following the death of a popular and long-serving former Middlesbrough Councillor at the age of 82.

Geraldine Purvis represented the town’s Brambles & Thorntree ward between 2011 and 2023.

During her time on the Council Geraldine served on a number of committees and scrutiny panels, and represented the authority on outside bodies including Thorntree Community Hub and the Tees Valley Arts Board.

She served in the ward alongside husband Peter, with whom she had four sons, until his death in 2018.

Former Middlesbrough elected Mayor and Labour group leader Dave Budd said: “Geraldine was one of the most caring and generous people I have known.

“Her passion for her part of Middlesbrough made her a great local councillor.

“She was really involved in every aspect of the local community and wasn’t afraid to speak her mind.

“Geraldine was a great local advocate.”

  • The funeral will take place at St Bede’s Chapel at Teesside Crematorium at 11am on Wednesday, February 26.
