Just days after the announced closure of Middlesbrough’s Cineworld, Odeon has confirmed plans to take over the venue.

The cinema, located on Marton Road, is among several Cineworld sites impacted by a nationwide restructuring plan and is slated to close in January.

Landlords Legal & General (L&G) announced that Odeon would occupy the site and undertake significant upgrades. A refurbishment project is scheduled to begin once Cineworld’s tenure ends in February.

A Return to Middlesbrough for Odeon

This move marks Odeon’s return to Middlesbrough, more than two decades after its Corporation Road branch closed in 2001.

Middlesbrough MP Andy McDonald welcomed the announcement, describing it as a positive step for the town centre and a win for local film fans.

Future Cinema Options

In addition to Odeon’s arrival, McDonald also praised separate plans for a boutique three-screen cinema at Captain Cook Square, which is set to open in summer 2025.

These developments promise to enhance Middlesbrough’s cultural and entertainment offerings, ensuring a variety of cinematic experiences for residents and visitors alike.
