A Stockton-on-Tees man has been handed a conditional discharge after admitting to stealing jars of mayonnaise and peanut butter from a local store.
James Dobbing, 43, of Leybourne Terrace, appeared at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on December 18, where he pleaded guilty to the theft and two counts of failing to surrender to police or court bail.
The court was told that on November 12, 2024, Dobbing stole 13 jars of Heinz mayonnaise and eight jars of Sun-Pat peanut butter, worth £38, from the B&M store on Stockton High Street.
Dobbing’s guilty plea was noted as a mitigating factor, and he was sentenced to a six-month conditional discharge.
The court also heard that Dobbing failed to appear in court on December 13, 2024, after being released on bail in a separate case. While no additional penalty was imposed for this offence, it was considered during sentencing.
In addition to the conditional discharge, Dobbing was ordered to pay £85 in prosecution costs and a £26 victim surcharge. The court approved a request for the payments to be deducted from his benefits, with a lump sum due within 14 days.
This sentencing highlights the court’s approach to balancing accountability with Dobbing’s financial circumstances and early guilty plea.
