Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury has officially switched his international allegiance to Bangladesh, with FIFA approving the move.
The 27-year-old Foxes academy graduate, born in Loughborough, previously represented England at the Under-21 level, making seven appearances. However, he qualifies to play for Bangladesh through his ancestral roots, marking a historic milestone for the nation’s football team.
Choudhury will become the first Premier League player to represent the Bengal Tigers, currently ranked 185th in FIFA’s world rankings.
A Proud Moment for Bangladesh
The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) expressed their delight at the news.
“We are pleased to inform that Hamza Dewan Choudhury has been cleared to play for Bangladesh,” the BFF announced in a statement. “This decision was made by the Player’s Status Chamber of the Football Tribunal of FIFA.”
Choudhury also shared his excitement:
“I’m so happy everything is over the line, and I can’t wait to be playing for Bangladesh.”
Career Highlights
Choudhury has been a consistent performer for Leicester City since making his senior debut in 2017, amassing 89 league appearances. He was part of the Foxes squad that secured the club’s first-ever FA Cup triumph in 2021.
As the only British Asian currently playing in the Premier League, Choudhury’s decision highlights the growing diversity in football. Another British Asian, midfielder Arjan Raikhy, is also on Leicester’s books but has yet to make his Premier League debut.
A Historic Shift
Choudhury’s move is a significant boost for Bangladeshi football, inspiring young players and elevating the nation’s visibility on the global stage. Fans eagerly await his debut in the iconic green and red jersey as he embarks on this new chapter of his career.
