6 North East businesses named by HMRC for millions in unpaid tax

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has published its latest quarterly list of individuals and businesses penalized for failing to comply with tax obligations or for deliberately filing inaccurate tax returns.

The details are made public when a person or business has deliberately defaulted on more than £25,000 in taxes. The most recent list, released last month, highlights cases from across the country, including several from the region.

Among those named were tradespeople, takeaway operators, and contractors, with one Middlesbrough-based firm defaulting on over £730,000—the largest amount on the list. In total, six businesses or individuals from the area accrued £1,169,140.23 in defaulted taxes.

CPBP Trading Limited

Location: Formerly of 36 Nut Lane, Middlesbrough
Defaulted Amount: £731,607
Penalty Charged: £512,124.90
An electrical contracting firm, CPBP Trading Limited, topped the list with unpaid taxes amounting to nearly three-quarters of a million pounds between July 2019 and June 2023.

Jack Harry Roberts

Location: 38 Chesterton Avenue, Thornaby, Stockton
Defaulted Amount: £173,644.09
Penalty Charged: £121,550.85
Jack Harry Roberts, an asbestos removal contractor, failed to pay taxes during a two-year period from April 2021 to April 2023.

The Balti and Pizza Masters Ltd

Location: 35 Halewood Avenue, Newcastle
Defaulted Amount: £127,714
Penalty Charged: £113,492.26
This takeaway shop evaded paying taxes over a four-year span from July 2016 to July 2020.

Robert David Smith

Location: Formerly of Seaham and Consett, County Durham
Defaulted Amount: £62,928.54
Penalty Charged: £28,632.48
The County Durham builder failed to pay taxes over a 24-month period leading up to April 2023.

Alan Dover (formerly A D Fencing)

Location: Formerly of James Terrace, Easington Lane
Defaulted Amount: £37,282.50
Penalty Charged: Not disclosed
A fencing and timber merchant trading as A D Fencing accrued unpaid taxes between November 2019 and May 2021.

Christopher Stephen Fretwell

Location: Newton Aycliffe
Defaulted Amount: £35,964.10
Penalty Charged: £23,826.20
The plasterer failed to meet tax obligations over a two-year period from April 2014 to April 2016.
