Police are appealing for information after a pedestrian is left with life-threatening injuries following a collision in Gateshead.

Shortly after 11:15pm yesterday (Monday), police received a report of a collision involving a pedestrian and a vehicle on High West Street, in the Gateshead area.

It was reported that a black BMW 525D had been travelling westbound on High West Street, near the Regent Street junction, when – for reasons yet to be established – it has struck a pedestrian on the road.

Emergency services attended the scene where the pedestrian – a man in his 90s – has sustained life-threatening injuries.

He was taken to hospital where he remains.

The driver of the BMW remained at the scene and is assisting officers with enquiries.

Officers from Northumbria Police’s Roads Policing Unit have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision – and have today (Tuesday) appealed for witnesses to come forward.
