A non-league footballer has appeared in court charged with the murder of another player following an altercation at York Station.

James Hitchcock, a goalkeeper for Barton Town FC, sustained serious injuries on 15 December after a night out in York. He passed away in hospital on Wednesday.

Mckenzie Dicicco, 22, of Belgravia Gardens, Middlesbrough, who has played for Thornaby, Northallerton, and Pickering football clubs, appeared at Leeds Crown Court charged with murder and affray.

Dicicco was remanded in custody and is due to appear again on 5 February, with a provisional trial date set for July.

Tributes to James Hitchcock

Barton Town FC described Hitchcock as a “popular but quiet” member of their first team.

Hitchcock, who had also played for Bridlington Town and Scarborough Athletic, is survived by his wife and young son.

The club has cancelled all matches scheduled for this weekend as a mark of respect for their teammate.

This tragic incident has deeply affected the local football community, with tributes pouring in to honor Hitchcock’s memory.
